FIVE MINUTES.
ONE CLEARER ROOM.
A quick decluttering routine that makes every clean faster, whether you do it yourself or book help.
Why five minutes is enough
Most clutter in a Barbados home is not mess, it is things that have not been put back. Post on the counter, sandals by the door, chargers on the dining table. A short, timed reset once a day stops those piles growing into a weekend job.
Set a timer for five minutes, pick one room, and only put things back where they live. Do not clean surfaces yet. Wiping comes later and is far quicker once the surfaces are clear.
The order that works
- Start at the doorway and move clockwise so nothing gets missed.
- Carry a basket for items that belong in another room, and empty it at the end rather than walking back and forth.
- Bin or recycle anything obvious as you go: flyers, empty bottles, packaging.
- Stop when the timer ends. The point is a habit, not a perfect room.
Rooms worth doing first
The kitchen counter and the entrance are the two places that make a home feel untidy fastest. Clearing them first gives the biggest visible change for the least effort. Bedrooms come next, especially the chair that collects clothes.
Before a professional clean
If you have booked a cleaner, a five-minute reset in each room beforehand means the visit goes on actual cleaning rather than tidying. Cleared surfaces can be wiped properly, floors can be reached, and the team can spend the time where it matters, such as bathrooms and the kitchen.
