Before the season

• Clear gutters, drains and yard grates so heavy rain runs off instead of backing up under doors.
• Move outdoor furniture, pots and loose items into storage or tie them down; wipe them first so they are not stored dirty.
• Check window seals and sliding-door tracks for debris so they close fully.
• Photograph rooms and contents for insurance before the season starts.

When a storm is forecast

Wash and put away dishes, empty bins and run the washing machine, because power and water may be interrupted. Fill clean containers with water for cleaning and flushing. Move rugs, cushions and electronics away from windows and doors that could leak.

After a storm

• Ventilate as soon as it is safe: open windows and doors to let damp air out before mould starts.
• Dry wet floors, rugs and soft furnishings within a day or two; anything still damp after that is at risk of mildew.
• Wash surfaces that flood water touched with detergent, then disinfect, and wear gloves.
• Check ceilings, wardrobes and behind furniture for damp patches over the following week.

When to book a deep clean

If water came in, or a property was closed for a while during the season, a deep clean with attention to grout, walls, cupboard interiors and soft furnishings is more effective than a regular visit. Describe what happened when you request the clean so the office can plan the scope.
